Frequently asked questions

How do I measure a room for flooring?

Measure the width and length of the room at their widest points, in feet, then multiply width × length to get the square footage. Do this room by room — this calculator adds them up for you and applies a waste factor at the end.

How much extra flooring should I order?

Installers commonly add around 10% on top of the measured square footage to cover cuts and waste. Diagonal layouts, patterned material, or rooms with lots of angles can call for more — check what your material supplier or installer recommends for your specific job.

How do I handle closets and irregular rooms?

Split the space into rectangles. Measure the main area as one row, then add the closet, alcove, or hallway as its own separate row. The calculator totals every row, so an L-shaped room is just two rectangles added together.
